Research profile
Rob Mestrom is an Assistant Professor in the research group Electromagnetics at the Electrical Engineering Department of Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). He has over 10 years of experience in multiphysics and modeling and worked on a large variety of engineering applications such as MEMS, antenna arrays, RF transceivers, RF hyperthermia antenna design, and EMC. His current research focuses on the application of electromagnetic waves for medical applications, where involvement of and joint work with (academic) clinical partners ensures clinical relevance of the work.
Rob Mestrom currently works on neurostimulation, including transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and EEG-based stimulation such as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). He applies electromagnetic field modeling to investigate the mechanisms of action, with the aim to optimize excitation stimuli for personalized care. Another application area is multiphysics (electromagnetic and thermal) modeling and model reduction for deep hyperthermia, where he is developing approaches for optimization and control to obtain focused energy deposition during treatments.
Since 2017, Rob Mestrom has been member of the Committee on Electromagnetic Fields of the Health Council of The Netherlands.
Academic background
Rob Mestrom studied Mechanical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e, The Netherlands) where he obtained his MSc degree in 2005 with the distinction cum laude. In 2009, he obtained his PhD under supervision of professors Henk Nijmeijer and Rob Fey of the Dynamics&Control group. He then became a postdoctoral researcher at TU/e to investigate approaches for antenna beam steering by means of RF-MEMS technology and phased arrays within the European CATRENE framework PANAMA. In 2012, he was appointed Assistant Professor with the Electromagnetics research group at the TU/e department of Electrical Engineering. From 2012 to 2015, he worked in education management as the Vice-Director of Education for the Bachelor Automotive program of the Electrical Engineering department.
