"My goal is to do more with less. To enable new medical, wireless and autonomous applications, by making electronics extremely tiny, green, versatile, and intelligent."

Research profile

Pieter Harpe is an associate professor with the Integrated Circuits group at the TU/e department of Electrical Engineering. He is heading the Resource Efficient Electronics Lab, focusing on analog and mixed-signal microelectronics that make efficient use of energy and chip area. While the main focus is on Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADCs), other analog and RF functions are also covered to develop integrated systems for sensor interfacing and communication. Some examples of the lab's activities can be found on the YouTube channel.

Components like ADCs are used in many applications since we need them to connect our analog world to digital processing systems. The Resource Efficient Electronics lab is particularly looking at medical and mobile applications, where it is important to achieve very low power consumption levels (milli-Watts down to even pico-Watts). It is far from straightforward to achieve such a low power consumption and still be able to digitize the analog signals with sufficient speed and precision.

Pieter Harpe has contributed to more than 100 scientific publications and 7 patents. He received a VENI grant (2013) and a VIDI grant (2018) from The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). He is a TPC member for ISSCC and A-SSCC, and was a TPC member for ESSCIRC and AACD. He is also Associate Editor for TCAS-I and Solid-State Circuits Society member-at-large for the ADCOM. He is a Senior IEEE member since 2015 and served as IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society Distinguished Lecturer in 2016 and 2017, and as IEEE JSSC guest editor for the ESSCIRC 2017 special edition.

Academic background

Pieter Harpe (IEEE Senior Member) received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from the Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands, in 2004 and 2010, respectively. In 2008, he started as researcher at Holst Centre / imec, The Netherlands. Since then, he has been working on ultra low-power wireless transceivers, with a main focus on ADC research and design. In April 2011, he joined Eindhoven University of Technology where he is currently an Associate Professor on low-power mixed-signal circuits. Dr. Harpe is TPC member for ISSCC and A-SSCC, Associate Editor for TCAS-I, and SSCS AdCom Member-at-Large. He also served as analog track chair for the ESSCIRC TPC, TPC member for AACD, and IEEE SSCS Distinguished Lecturer. He is recipient of the ISSCC 2015 Distinguished Technical Paper Award. According to Google Scholar, he accumulated >5000 citations and an h-index of 40.
