Research profile

Onno Boxma is professor of Stochastic Operations Research in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science in Eindhoven University of Technology. His main research interests are in applied probability and stochastic operations research, with a particular emphasis on insurance risk and, in particular, queuing theory and its applications to the performance analysis of computer, communication, production and traffic systems. He has published or edited five books in these areas, and 225 refereed papers. Current course topics include Stochastic Processes, Stochastics and Simulation for Finance, Stochastic Performance Modeling and Probability and Stochastics.

Academic background

Onno Boxma received his PhD in Mathematics with honors (cum laude) from Utrecht University in 1977.  From 1974 to 1985 he worked at the Mathematical Institute of Utrecht University with a one-year interruption as postdoctoral fellow at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center (1978-1979). From August 1985 until August 1998 he was affiliated with CWI, as Head of the Performance Analysis group and later as Head of the Department of Operations Research, Statistics and Systems Theory – respectively the Department of Probability, Networks and Algorithms. From August 1987 to August 1998, Onno was Full Professor of Operations Research in the Department of Economics of Tilburg University. He joined the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of TU/e in 1998, and served as vice-dean from 2009 until 2013.

He has also served on the editorial board of several journals. During 2004-2009 he was editor-in-Chief of Queueing Systems, and since 2011 he is one of the Coordinating Editors of the Applied Probability journals. From 2005 to 2011 he was scientific director of Eurandom.
