Research profile

Niels Petterson is a PhD candidate in the Photoacoustics & Ultrasound Laboratory Eindhoven (PULS/e) supervised by dr. ir. Richard Lopata. He is currently working on peri-operative ultrasound monitoring of patients suffering from an abdominal aortic aneurysm. The main focus of his work lies in model based clinical decision support, where computer models are supplied with clinical ultrasound data to generate meaningful insight in disease progression. Specifically, he is involved in the enhancement of mechanical models representing aortic aneurysms and their surroundings, to find an accurate description of the vascular wall state. Furthermore, Niels is exploring image processing methods to ensure optimal model input, i.e. ultrasound images of the abdomen.

Academic background

Niels Petterson studied BioMedical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e, The Netherlands). During his MSc graduation project he worked on echocardiographic strain imaging of the heart. This research consisted of both experimental ultrasound imaging of ex vivo porcine hearts, as well as the implementation of novel image processing techniques for accurate strain estimation. As part of his graduation, he performed an internship at the Ultrasound Elasticity and Imaging Laboratory at the Columbia University in New York, where he worked on measuring mechanical activation patterns of the left ventricle using ultrafast ultrasound imaging. He obtained his Master of Science degree in 2015 and started to work on a PhD in the Cardiovascular Biomechanics group under supervision of dr. ir. Richard Lopata and prof. dr. ir. Frans van de Vosse. Niels has overseen several MSc projects and has supervised the course Functional measurements of heart and circulation in the BSc program.
