Research profile

Nathalie Kerstens was born in Diest, Belgium on the 30th of December 1987. After receiving her bachelor’s in industrial engineering from the Nayer Institute she graduated with honors from the master program ‘Industrial Sciences: Construction Engineering’ at the KU Leuven association (campus De Nayer) in 2011. Her thesis ‘Hygrothermal impact on a masonry wall with interior insulation’ is the result of an intensive collaboration with the KU Leuven and the Scientific and Technical Centre for Construction (WTCB Belgium) and received a national price for Best Flemish Engineering Master Thesis in 2011 (IE price). Nathalie further specialized herself with a second MSc. (cum laude) in ‘Construction Management and Engineering’ in 2014 from the TU Eindhoven. Her graduation project involved the development of a business model for Climate-KIC Innovation projects in the commercialization of technology through a start-up. During her master she gained additional experience in educational programmes in Technical Management and Technology Entrepreneurship. After finishing her master Nathalie worked as a Dissemination Officer for EIT Digital, a Knowledge and Innovation Community of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology. Her work involved the process of promoting and disseminating the online Innovation and Entrepreneurship content portfolio among the EIT Digital partner universities. In October 2015 Nathalie started a PhD project at the Eindhoven University of Technology in collaboration with the Netherlands Space Office and the European Space Agency. Her research focused on managing innovation across sectoral boundaries. Her academic work has been presented on several conferences such as the Academy of Management, EURAM, IPDMC, IAC and EGOS. Her research has been published in Space Policy. During her PhD trajectory she has kept her connection to EIT Digital as the coordinator for TU/e Innovation and Entrepreneurship education. Additionally, she has been a member of the organizational committee, speaker and editor of the proceedings of two European conferences. The first conference ‘Energy and Space Synergies’ took place at the European Parliament on the 24th of April 2018. The second workshop ‘Space as an enabler for sustainable energy management - local and regional perspectives’ took place at the European Committee of the Regions on the 6th of June 2018. During the summer of 2019 she participated in the Space Studies Program of the International Space University in Strasbourg, from which she graduated in the top five of the class. Since November 2019 she works for TU/e innovation Space as Program Manager Business Collaboration.
