Research profile

Michel Westenberg is an associate professor of Visual Analytics for Healthcare at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). His research interest is data visualization and visual analytics in life sciences and healthcare, and he has past experience in image processing and computer modeling of the human visual system.

Michel introduces students to the theory and practice of data visualization, making them familiar with the aims and challenges of data visualization, as well as the theory, principles, and methods frequently used in the construction and use of data visualization applications. Several tools that Michel and his PhD students have developed as part of their research have been released either as open source or as free downloadable software. Some examples are eXamine (a visual analytics method for interpreting modular structures in biological networks), developed in collaboration with CWI and VU Amsterdam; COMBat (a visualization tool for exploring co-occurring annotation terms in biological data sets), developed for Top Institute Food and Nutrition in Wageningen; and SpotXplore (which enhances the visual analysis of gene expression), developed in collaboration with Radboud University Medical Center.

Academic background

Michel Westenberg holds a PhD in mathematics and natural sciences (2001) and an MSc in computing science (1996) from the University of Groningen, The Netherlands. In 2004, he was awarded a Humboldt Research Fellowship by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, which funded a position as postdoc at the Institute for Visualization and Interactive Systems, University of Stuttgart. He returned as a postdoc to the Institute for Mathematics and Computing Science, University of Groningen in 2006.

Michel has been working at the TU/e Department of Mathematics and Computer Science since July 2008. He is the program director of the Data Science bachelor program, which is offered jointly with Tilburg University. He has previously acted as Vice-director of the Computer Science Graduate Program.
