Research profile
Mathieu (Paul) Weggeman is Full Professor of Organizational Science and Innovation Management at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). His primary expertise lies in the field of organizational design, innovation management and work processes in knowledge-intensive organizations. Mathieu’s research focuses understanding and explaining innovation processes in technology, knowledge-intensive and cultural organizations. His special attention goes to leading professionals, strategy formulation, realizing collective ambition in teams and organizations and the working methods and value systems of the new generation.
With his PhD students, he conducts research on flow and team flow among professionals, on the motives that professionals have to create and share knowledge, on the characteristics of the (pre) fuzzy front end of innovation processes and on the influence of the aesthetics of work processes on the affective bonding of professionals and in line with this on the knowledge productivity of the organization.
Academic background
Mathieu Weggeman obtained an MSc in Industrial Engineering from TU/e and holds a PhD in Strategic Management from Tilburg University. Prior to joining TU/e, he worked as a management consultant for Philips Research and for the Executive Committee of Philips Electronics. He also worked and still works as a consultant advising organizations on strategy development, R&D management, and the (re)design of knowledge intensive organizations.
Mathieu served on the editorial board of Organization Studies and has published in R&D Management, Journal of Product Innovation Management, Human Relations, Journal of Organizational Change Management and many other journals. He received an award for his complete work from the Dutch Order of Organizational Experts (Orde van Organisatiedeskundigen, OOA) in 2001. In 2005, colleagues elected him as one of the ten most influential Dutch management consultants. In 2008, his book “Leading professionals? Don’t! A continental European perspective” won the Management Book of the Year prize.
Weggeman was a member of the Arts Council of the Netherlands en serves on several non-executive boards of public organizations in higher education and health care.
