"I am fascinated by electromagnetic detection methods and algorithms that help us see and detect in circumstances where the eye is blind or unfit for observation."
Research profile
Martijn van Beurden is Full Professor of 'Computational Electromagnetics in complex high-tech systems' in the research group Electromagnetics at the TU/e department of Electrical Engineering. The research concentrates on analysis, design, and detection methods for electromagnetic wave behavior, mainly by means of numerical methods. Detection and design are so-called inverse problems, which often rely on fast modeling methods. In design, we try to manipulate the electromagnetic field to exhibit a behavior that suits a particular functionality. In detection, the electromagnetic field is observed and from these observations the underlying materials and their spatial distributions are reconstructed.
Martijn van Beurden’s research interests are fast modeling techniques, integral equations, functional analysis with respect to electromagnetic field problems, inverse scattering, nonlinear optimization. His current projects involve, amongst others, forward and inverse scattering for periodic structures and finitely repetitive structures in layered media; modeling of electromagnetic fields in configurations with a stochastic or uncertain nature; and the design and optimization of antennas.
Academic background
Martijn van Beurden studied Electrical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e, the Netherlands) where he obtained his MSc in 1997 (cum laude). For his MSc thesis he was awarded the C.I.V.I. prize for Electrical Engineering. He then started his PhD research at TU/e under the supervision of professors Anton Tijhuis and Peter Zwamborn. In 2000, he conducted research on the optimization of wire antennas at the Mathematics Department of the University of Dundee (Scotland, UK) with professors Paul Smith and Roger Fletcher. In September 2000, he was appointed Assistant Professor at TU/e. In 2003, he received his PhD degree (cum laude) and in 2004, he received the ASML prize for the best PhD thesis in applied research at TU/e. In January 2012, Martijn van Beurden became Associate Professor and sinds June 2019 he is full professor in the Electromagnetics group of the TU/e department of Electrical Engineering.
