Research profile

Madita Wolter (1991) received her bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Bayreuth (Germany) in 2013. During her graduate studies she focused on molecular biology and biochemistry and graduated in 2015. As part of her master’s program she spent three months at the department of biology at the University of York (United Kingdom) in the group led by Dr. Sangeeta Chawla where she worked on gene expression patterns in mouse and rat brains. Madita submitted her master thesis at the institute of cell biology at the University of Bayreuth. The main part of her thesis was a screen on genetic interaction partners in baker’s yeast extending our knowledge of the inheritance of mitochondria. After her graduation she worked as a scientific assistant at the Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf, Germany for eight months.

In September 2016 she started working as a PhD candidate in the group of dr. Christian Ottmann and prof. dr. ir. Luc Brunsveld as part of the TASPPI (Targeted Stabilization of Protein-Protein Interactions) project.  The project’s aim is to discover new drugs through the stabilization of specific protein-protein interactions. Since the 14-3-3 proteins are involved in a huge variety of diseases from small infections to severe metabolic diseases and are highly abundant in human cells, she will concentrate on this protein family. Therefore she will explore the interface of 14-3-3 proteins and their interaction partners and identify small molecules which stabilize this interface. Additionally to the biophysical and structural analysis, these compounds will be tested in cell culture to explore their potential as drugs.
