Research profile

Lotte Romijn is a PhD student at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). Prior to her PhD studies she completed a Master’s degree in Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Physics at the University of Melbourne, Australia. For her Master’s thesis she studied the biomechanics of the small-intestinal crypt by developing computational models of tissue monolayers.

Lotte's current work is in the field of illumination optics and involves the design of freeform reflector and lens surfaces for LED-based applications, under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Jan ten Thije Boonkkamp and Prof. Wilbert Ijzerman. Her focus is on developing numerical methods to solve generalized Monge-Ampère equations for a range of optical systems.

Academic background

Lotte Romijn completed a Bachelor of Science at Amsterdam University College (AUC) in the Netherlands, followed by a Master’s degree (summa cum laude) in Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Physics at the University of Melbourne in Australia. Her research interests include numerical methods for nonlinear partial differential equations, calculus of variations, ordinary differential equation models and associated boundary-value problems, and multiscale modeling. For her Master’s thesis she undertook a project in computational biology and studied the biomechanics of the small-intestinal crypt. To assist experiments with crypt cultures in vitro, she developed a computational model to describe and simulate epithelial buckling in the crypt.
