Research profile
Juliëtte van Duijnhoven is an assistant professor within the Building Lighting group embedded in the unit Building Physics and Services of the department of the Built Environment (TU/e). She brings in expertise on measuring and evaluating lighting conditions in the built environment. She works on 1) developing and advancing methods to gather personal lighting conditions of individuals to further progress the insights on the effects of light on human health, performance, and wellbeing, 2) investigating factors that affect personal light exposure patterns, and 3) supporting end users to get exposed to the right light at the right time (through healthy buildings and/or healthy light exposure behavior). Her main aim is to create sustainable lighting solutions in the built environment incorporating the individual differences in light exposure patterns. She mostly focuses on (home) office environments. Juliëtte is currently supervising three PhD students (one as part of the LIGHTCAP project, one focusing on quantification methods for personal light exposure patterns, and one focusing on smart lighting systems). She has supervised two EngD trainees (one as part of the Smart Space project and one as part of the VETHO project). Additionally, she has been WP2 leader in the DESL project.
Within the TU/e, Juliëtte is member of the Health in the Built Environment team as well as member of the Intelligent Lighting Institute. Beyond committee work at the TU/e, Juliëtte is associate editor for the lighting journal LEUKOS and editor for the journal Lighting Research and Technology. Furhermore, Juliëtte is active within the CIE as member of JTC18 (lighting ecudation) and JTC20 (wearable alpha-opic dosimetry) and within the ELEA as member of the executive committee. Juliëtte chaired the core team indoor lighting at the Dutch association of light (NSVV) from 2020-2024.
Academic background
Juliëtte van Duijnhoven obtained her BSc degree in Building Engineering (TU/e) in 2012. In 2015, she obtained her MSc degree within the same department, specialized on building physics and services (Building Lighting - TU/e). Juliëtte obtained her PhD degree cum laude in 2019 (TU/e). For 1.5 years, Juliëtte has been working as a postdoc researcher before she was appointed assistant professor in 2021.
Onderwijs en Doceren
Juliëtte has been involved in many teaching activities. In 2018, she obtained her University Teaching Qualification (BKO). Currently, she is responsible for two master courses and she is co-teaching in several bachelor courses, all related to light. In addition, she has been supervising numerous students doing a master research project and students doing a graduation project within the Building Lighting group. An alumni overview including the topics of graduation projects can be found on the website of the Building Lighting group.
