The performance of engineered materials such as composites and 3D printed materials can be improved significantly, by studying the evolution of their complex microstructures using advanced numerical techniques.
Research profile
Joris Remmers is associate professor of Composite Materials with the research group Mechanics of Materials at the department of Mechanical Engineering. He is involved with the research on fiber reinforced composite materials and additive manufacturing, focusing on improving the mechanical properties of these products by investigating the relation between the manufacturing process conditions, the microstructure of the materials, and the mechanical properties of the final structure. To this end he uses a variety of advanced numerical techniques to investigate these multi-physics phenomena across different length scales.
Academic background
Joris Remmers studied Aerospace Engineering at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft, the Netherlands) and obtained his MSc in 1998. In 2006, he obtained his PhD at the same university on the simulation of crack propagation in materials and structures by using the partition of unity method. In 2007 he became an assistant professor at the department of Mechanical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e, the Netherlands). He currently is associate professor of Composite Materials with the research group Mechanics of Materials of the same department.
