Research profile

Jeanine Prompers is associate professor of Biomedical Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS) in the TU/e department of Biomedical Engineering. Her research interest is to characterize metabolic disturbances underlying the etiology of metabolic diseases, in particular the metabolic syndrome and its complications, including type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease and cardiovascular disease. To this end, she develops in vivo MRS methods to study metabolic processes in skeletal muscle, heart and liver, such as mitochondrial bioenergetics and carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. She combines pre-clinical studies with translational research in patients. For the latter, she is involved in the development of world’s first dedicated whole-body 7 tesla (7T) MR scanner for metabolic imaging (META-scan) in humans. In addition, she applies ultra-high field MRI (22.3 T, uNMR-NL facility) to study very small model systems, such as organoids and zebrafish. 

Currently, Jeanine Prompers is also setting up a research line in the field of Image Based Regenerative Medicine. The goal is to develop innovative MRI methods to non-invasively monitor the success of regenerative therapies, for example in the heart after a myocardial infarction.

Academic background

Jeanine Prompersstudied Chemistry at Radboud University Nijmegen (the Netherlands), where she graduated cum laude in 1994. The following years she performed PhD research in the field of high-resolution protein Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy in the group of Prof. Cees Hilbers at the same university. In 1999, she obtained her PhD degree with her dissertation "NMR studies of Fusarium solanipisicutinase - Structure-mobility-function relationships". After her PhD, she was awarded a long-term postdoctoral fellowship of the Human Frontier of Science Program,to perform two years of research with Prof. RafaëlBrüschweilerat Clark University (USA). In 2002, she joined the Biomedical NMR group of Prof. KlaasNicolay at Eindhoven University of Technology as an assistant professor. In 2008, she was awarded a NWO VIDI grant entitled ‘’In vivo magnetic resonance spectroscopy of lipid dynamics in insulin-resistant muscle’’. In 2012, she was promoted to associate professor.In 2016, she took on a position in the High Field MRI Group at the University Medical Center Utrecht (UMCU).
