Academic background

Menno Houben received his BSc Chemical Engineering at the Eindhoven University of Technology. His MSc project was carried out in the Molecular Systems and Materials Chemistry Group, Eindhoven University of Technology.
In 2017 he started as PhD student in the Membrane Materials and Processes Group, Department of Chemical Engineering & Chemistry, Eindhoven University of Technology.

Research profile

In the project Membrane development for biogas upgrading we aim to develop novel polymeric membranes for high pressure gas separation of CO2 from the other light gasses. Until now much research has been performed on the separation of CO2 from CH4 and N2. However, especially the presence of CO and H2S has tremendous impact on membrane performance in terms of permeability and selectivity, although these effects have hardly been researched. At the same time CO2 has a strong plasticization effect on polymer membranes, which reduces the selectivity of the membrane dramatically. Investigating and understanding these effects is essential for the development of next generation gas separation membranes.
