Research profile

Helianthe Kort is a Full Professor and Chair of Building Lighting Research group at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). Her areas of expertise include Technology in medicine and health care, sanitary engineering gerontechnology, domotica and smart technology. She specializes in research on the impact of the built environment on health, prevention of building related symptoms and diseases and  support for daily activities and participation. Her research has a focus on searching for evidence of the built environment to realize quality of life and positive health for building users. The application domains cover the full healing environment health continuum from prevention at home and work to long-term care and care in hospitals. 

Academic background

Helianthe Kort obtained her PhD in the Built Environment from TU/e and also holds an MSc in medical biology from Utrecht University. She has been a Full Professor and Chair of Technology for Healthcare Innovations at Utrecht University of Applied Sciences for almost 21 years and has been Visiting Professor, at the Centre for Technology Enabled Health Research, at the Faculty of Health & Life Sciences, Coventry University and has undertaken several research visits to India, Taiwan, Brazil and the USA.

Helianthe is also on the committee for several programs of ZonMw, the Dutch organization for healthcare research and innovation (Create Health, IMDI, CitizenScience), a reviewer for the Flemish government for projects on health innovations, a past board member of the Herman Bouma Foundation for Gerontechnology, Board member of the program Healthcare Innovation Transfer (HIT), member of the Man-Machine-Interaction (MMI) platform and a Board member of  the Dutch Research Council NWO-SIA Regieorgaan for practice-based research. In addition, she is President of the International Society for Gerontechnology and an associate editor of the  Gerontechnology journal. From 2012 onward she was a member of the scientific committee of the ISG world conferences. From 2016 -2017 she was the guest editor of the Gerontechnology journal about the topic of Healthy Building Environments for ageing adults (Gerontechnology, 2017 vol 16 No4). Helianthe was a board member of the Active Ageing & Design committee, currently called Built4Life of the European Construction Technology Platform. In June 2022 she and her co-authors received WILEY’s Top downloaded article for the paper INDOOR AIR Classrooms' indoor environmental conditions affecting the academic achievement of Students and Teachers in higher education: A systematic literature review  (Among work published between 1 January 2019 - 31 December 2020). In December 2022 she received the Friend of Nursing Award from Sigma Theta Tau ( recognizing her efforts as a non-nurse for the local healthcare community or the health of people).

In 2015 stemden de VN-lidstaten in met 17 wereldwijde duurzame ontwikkelingsdoelstellingen (Sustainable Development Goals, SDG's) om armoede te beëindigen, de planeet te beschermen en voor iedereen welvaart te garanderen. Het werk van deze persoon draagt bij aan de volgende duurzame ontwikkelingsdoelstelling(en):
