Research profile

The most important scholarly work of Lintsen has consisted of putting together two monograph series about the history of technology in the Netherlands during the 19th and 20th centuries (up to ca. 1970). At this moment his research is focused on a historical analysis of the period after 1970. He also intends to relate the historical analyses to major sociotechnological issues, especially sustainability . Historical analysis confirms that a major shift occurred during the 1970s, dramatically altering the relationship between technology and society. Traditional faith in progress, which for centuries had made affluence and industrialization the aims of science and technology, had reached its limits. Technology today demands a new legitimation of and approach to the interaction between technology and society.  Lintsen received his master’s degree in applied physics in 1972. He became an assistant professor in ‘technology and society’ at Eindhoven University of Technology and became an expert in historical research. In 1980 he took his doctorate degree for his PhD thesis about the rise and development of the engineering profession in the Netherlands during the 19th century. Lintsen has devoted his career to the development and institutionalization of history of technology in the Netherlands. One of the highlights has been the establishment of the Stichting Historie der Techniek1 – at Lintsen’s initiative – by the Koninklijk Instituut van Ingenieurs2 (KIvI) in 1988, which to this day remains the most important organization for domestic and international research programmes on the history of technology. In 1990 Lintsen was appointed a half-time professor of History of Technology at Delft University of Technology and Eindhoven University of Technology, respectively. In 1995 the six-volume series on technology in the Netherlands during the 19th century was completed, followed by the seven-volume series on the 20th century in 2004. From 2003 onward he combined his scholarly duties with senior administrative posts. He became a full-time professor in Eindhoven, chairman of the Posthumus research school and assistant dean to the Department of Industrial Engineering and Innovation Sciences (where he was placed in charge of the new Subdepartment of Innovation Sciences). 1 Foundation for the History of Technology 2 Royal Institution of Engineers in the Netherlands
