“Space is the place where history inscribes itself, and architecture should be the analysis of that which dwells and is born there. The cost of this would be that architects became what they should be: awakeners of consciousness, educators and thereby liberators.”
Hüsnü Yegenoglu‘s key teaching topics are building typology, urban morphology and the exploration of cultural subjects by spatial analysis and cinematographic observation. His key research area is particularly related to multidisciplinary themes that focus on ‘Spatial Turn’, an intellectual movement that places emphasis on the intrinsic correlations between historiography, topography, memory and the production of architectural space. In order to come to a polyphonic and perspectival understanding of research topics, he is merging the two most prevailing but different approaches in the study of historical and spatial phenomena. The nomothetic approach explains historical development through objective methodological research while the idiographic approach is based on descriptions of phenomena that are open to very personal subjective observations.
Hüsnü Yegenoglu received his architecture degree with honors (cum laude) from the Darmstadt Technical University in Germany. He designed projects in the Netherlands, Germany and Turkey, such as the housing for elderly in Neu-Isenburg (GER), the primary school in Sögütlü (TR) and the social housing complex in Amsterdam (NL). Since 1997 he has been teaching as assistant professor courses in architectural analysis and architectural design at the Eindhoven University of Technology. He was member of the Aesthetics Committee of Amsterdam as well as of the Dutch Architecture Foundation in Rotterdam. In 2016 he received his PhD for his thesis on the social and architectural transformation of a pre-war social housing area in Amsterdam. Since 2014 he is member of the editorial board of the architectural journal OASE and co-organiser of the web-site ‘chronotopos’ focusing on the inscriptions of cultural and power related alterations in architectural space.
