Research profile

Günter is Assistant Professor in the Systemic Change Cluster in the Department of Industrial Design. His research interests lie at the intersection of games user research, data analytics, and information visualization. His work particularly centers on understanding player behavior in games and on researching methods to explore and communicate the collected data to derive actionable insights for game design and development. As part of this, he is working on data visualizations to support the analysis of the increasingly large-scale player behavioral datasets used in game analytics. Günter frequently serves on the program committee of games, visualization, and human-computer interaction related conferences. He is actively involved in the organization of academic games conferences such as CHI PLAY for which he serves as program chair in 2019. His research has been published in international journals and conference proceedings, such as CHI, CHI PLAY, FDG, Computers & Graphics, and Entertainment Computing.

Academic background

Günter holds a diploma degree in computer science from the University of Technology from where he graduated with distinction in 2005. He received a doctoral degree in natural sciences for his work on hardware accelerated radiosity algorithmsfrom the University of Applied Arts Vienna from where he graduated with distinction four years later, in 2009. In 2018, he joined TU/e as assistant professor. He also holds a permanent position as Senior Scientist at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, Institute of Art & Technology.
