Esin Ilhan Caarls is an Assistant Professor in the Electromechanics and Power Electronics group in the Department of Electrical Engineering. Her research interests are towards multi-physical approaches combining energy and thermal domains in smart mobility applications, incorporation of real-time field data towards design models, and use of lightweight & recyclable (magnetic) materials in electrical drives. Enabling “affordable” solutions for transportation in a circular economy is one of Ilhan Caarls’ main research drivers. Currently, she is also working in an industrial setting on the design and development of high efficient electrical drives in diverse mobility applications.
Ilhan Caarls has strong experience in requirements engineering, installation and testing of electric drive components and electrical machine development, from design to optimization. She has also done consultancy and is an experienced supervisor of graduate and undergraduate students. Her PhD research included nonlinear magnetic and thermal modeling techniques for the design and validation of novel rotary machines for servo and automotive applications. She is highly skilled in a variety of software systems for electromagnetic/thermal design, testing, numerical computation and powertrain simulations.
Esin Ilhan Caarls obtained her BS in Electrical Engineering from Istanbul Technical University (ITU, Turkey) in 2007. With her work on solar-powered boats, she obtained a full TU/e scholarship, which lead to her MSc (2009) and PhD (2014) degrees in Electrical Engineering at TU/e. Ilhan Caarls did international internships at Siemens Egypt (2006) and Philips Netherlands (2008), and worked as the head of the electronics team in Humanoid Robotics Team of TechUnited at TU/e from 2008.
Since 2015, she has been working as an Electrical System Engineer at Bosch Transmission Technology (Netherlands). In this period, she successfully supervised MSc, PDEng and PhD projects as a company coach, together with Dutch and German universities. As of 2020, she returned to TU/e as a part-time Assistant Professor.
