Academic background

Emma Moonen obtained her BSc. (2017) and MSc. (2019) in Mechanical Engineering from Eindhoven University of Technology. During her Bachelor Final Project she studied the replication of patterned microsieves for single cell trapping by capillary pumping. During her master she spend several months at the University of Cambridge (UK) where she studied the fabrication of flexible transparent electrodes for simultaneous electrophysiology and advanced optical microscopy. Her master thesis research performed in the Microsystems group of Prof. Jaap den Toonder was focused on the design, fabrication and testing of Point-of-Care (POC) technology. The aim of this project was to incorporate a bioluminescence sensor for detection of therapeutic antibodies, developed by a collaborator, in a POC chip. She started as a PhD candidate in the Microsystems group of Prof. Jaap den Toonder in December 2019. Her PhD project was part of the Sentinel project which aims to develop a hybrid patch for early warning. In March 2024 she received her PhD cum laude. Currently, she has a postion as Postdoc funded by an Faculty of Impact grant from the NWO.

Research profile

Emma Moonen has recently been appointed as a fellow in the new, national Faculty of Impact Program and is part of the Microsystems Group, Department of Mechanical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e).

The Faculty of Impact is a 2-year, national program that aims to turn breakthrough science into a business. Joining this program gives me the opportunity to work on the project that focuses on the commercialization of breakthrough sweat sensing devices for health monitoring. The sweat sensing platform in development enables usage of low volumes of sweat for analysis and provides a platform to use sweat as a source for clinical information.
