Research profile

Harald van Brummelen is Full Professor and section leader of the Multiscale Engineering Fluid Dynamics Group at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). The MEFD chair was established in 2009 as one of the 3TU chairs within the Centre of Excellence for Multiscale Phenomena. The MEFD group focuses on the development, analysis and application of mathematical-physical models and advanced numerical techniques for multiscale flow problems in engineering applications, with particular emphasis on interface and free-boundary problems and auxiliary-field interactions. 

Harald’s research interests include multiscale problems and techniques, free-boundary and interface problems, fluid-structure interaction kinetic models and the Boltzmann equation, moment-closure approximations and goal-oriented error estimation and adaptivity. Course material includes manufacturing technology, mechanical technology, robotics, vehicle technology and transport technology, aircraft and spacecraft, technical mechanics and fluid dynamics. 

Academic background

Harald van Brummelen received his MSc in Mechanical Engineering from Twente University of Technology in 1997, followed by a stint as a Doctoral researcher, Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Cluster, Centre for Mathematics and Computer Science, Amsterdam, ontaining his PhD in 2002. In 2001, he became a Postdoctoral fellow, Engineering Mechanics, Delft University of Technology, Department of Aerospace Engineering, and subsequently Assistant Professor, Engineering Mechanics, and Associate Professor in the Institute for Precision and Microsystems Engineering at the same University. 

In 2009, Harald joined the TU/e as Full Professor, Centre for Analysis, Scientific computing and Applications and Full Professor, Multiscale Engineering Fluid Dynamic. In addition to his work at TU/e, he acts as Advisor at the Centre of Mathematics and Computer Science and Director of the Eindhoven Multiscale Institute. Harald is also an editorial board member for Coupled Systems Mechanics.
