Research profile
Daniel Tetteroo is Assistant Professor of Physical Rehabilitation at the Future Everyday group, and the co-founder of Picoo BV, a startup that develops interactive toys for active play. Tetteroo is interested in the design of physical rehabilitation technology, end-user development, personalization, and playful interaction. He is a human-computer interaction (HCI) researcher, designer, and developer who understands both analysis and synthesis, and both technology and design. His specialties include qualitative user research methodology, designing for health, community design, cultures of participation, designing for children, tangible interfaces, and emergent ambient entertainment.
Tetteroo is leading the Future Everyday Health squad at Industrial Design, and chair of the Faculty Council. He is a board member of the Centre for Unusual Collaborations, and a member of the Eindhoven Young Academy of Engineers. He also is co-organizer of the workshop on End-user Development in the Internet of Things Era.
Academic background
Daniel Tetteroo got his BSc in Computer Science from the University of Twente in 2008, followed by an MSc in Human Media Interaction in 2010. He worked as postgraduate design engineer at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) for two years before starting his PhD research here in 2012. He worked for 3 months as visiting researcher at Colorado University in Boulder (USA). He obtained his PhD in 2015 with his thesis on end-user adaptable rehabilitation technology. Tetteroo briefly worked as user experience consultant at Alten Nederland and information architect for ASML before founding Picoo BV in 2016 and returning to TU/e as Assistant Professor in 2017.

Student projects I like to coach
“I am interested in projects related to the personalization of designs, more specific: customizable after the design process (when being used). This does not necessarily need to be a project connected to health. Within healthcare I like to coach projects that focus on wearables and behavior change, like the project by Luca I mentioned before. I am also interested in more explorative, experimental research projects and would really like to coach more of these.”
Coaching
“I am coaching in a positive manner: emphasizing the things that students do well. I do ask questions, but in constructive way. I plan weekly meetings with my FBP and FMP students, according to their need. I expect them to be independent: I am willing to answer questions, but only if they have thought about it first themselves. So, students who ask: ‘what should I do?’ can expect the answer: what do you think you should do?”
Network
“My network is mainly in the health domain. If students are interested in methodological research, I could connect them with researchers of the Colorado University (USA), or the University of Bari (Italy). In the medical field I work together with the universities of Maastricht, Wageningen, and Utrecht. However, I prefer to think along with students who have a certain question and look for the right person or institute who could help them with that specific topic, rather than to give them a list of my contacts.”
Expertise gerelateerd aan duurzame ontwikkelingsdoelstellingen van de VN
