Celien Jacobs is a doctoral candidate (PhD) in the Orthopaedic Biomechanics group under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Keita Ito. Her research focusses on developing a biomimetic artificial intervertebral disc for the cervical spine as a better treatment for degenerated intervertebral disc induced neck pain. This novel prosthesis contains a hydrogel-core and fiber-jacket, mimicking the structure and deformation properties of the natural disc. The goal of this project is to demonstrate that a biomimetic artificial disc can be created, become incorporated and return proper function to the spine. This multidisciplinary project covers a broad range of topics, such as in vitro biomechanical analysis, biocompatibility testing, osteoconductivity treatments and evaluation, and sterilization procedures.
Celien Jacobs studied the bachelor Medical sciences and Technology at Eindhoven University of Technology where she received her BSc degree in 2015. At the same university, she obtained her MSc degree in 2018 within the Orthopaedic Biomechanics group of Prof. Dr. Keita Ito from the Biomedical Engineering department. She performed her graduation project at LifeTec Group, where she mechanically characterized the first prototype of the biomimetic artificial intervertebral disc for the cervical spine. As part of her MSc degree, she completed an internship at the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation from the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane. There she worked on alginate recovered double-network hydrogel constructs for articular cartilage tissue engineering. In 2019, she started as a PhD candidate in the Orthopaedic Biomechanics group where she will continue to work on the development of the biomimetic artificial intervertebral disc for the cervical spine.
