Research profile

Kees Bastiaansen is part-time associate professor with the research group Functional Organic Materials and Devices at Eindhoven University of Technology (Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry). His research centers around the processing and structure-property relationships of polymers - with an emphasis on aligned, oriented systems, their functional properties and devices. His current research is mainly in polymers for sensors, actuators, smart windows and high performance composites. In his research, Bastiaansen collaborates with a large number of industrial partners through various multi-partner projects, including a number of EU, UK and NL government funded projects.

Bastiaansen has been active in polymers in an industrial and an academic environment for over 25 years. He is the author or co-author of more than 200 peer reviewed papers, he is co-inventor of more than 80 international patent applications and co-founder of more than 7 start-up companies. He is a science and technology advisor at multinationals, small and medium size enterprises and start-ups.

Academic background

Between 1985 and 1995, Kees Bastiaansen worked as a scientist at DSM Research focusing on innovation in polymer science. In 1991, he obtained his PhD degree on the ultimate properties of chain-extended flexible polymers and in 1995 he part-time joined the ETHZ (Zürich, Switzerland) and the Eindhoven University of Technology. In 2009, he was appointed as a part-time professor at the University of London, Queen Mary (UK). Kees Bastiaansen is a teacher of the course Functional and Mechanical Properties of Materials and is involved in a variety of other teaching activities including entrepreneurship courses.  He is also the main organizer of the post-academic course Polymer Properties (RPK-C).
