Research profile
Britte Sloothaak (b. 1984) is an art historian and collection curator specialized in modern and contemporary art. She is experienced in art collections within large public institutions and curatorial projects in the context of architectural renovations. In her projects she prioritizes a critical evaluation of the construction of knowledge and "value" in art collections, from a feminist and decolonial perspective. She developed this interest while doing archival research, writing acquisition proposals and curating exhibitions for the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam for more than ten years.
After the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, she took a leading role in developing a new collection policy for the TU/e Art Collection in Eindhoven, for which she developed a new line of commissioned artworks. The first part of this iteration is Loom Room, a 9 meter high textile installation by Hella Jongerius in a robust modernist building on the campus that originally housed the first computer center of the technical university, and is now housing the Eindhoven Artificial Intelligence Systems Institute (EAISI). She teaches, lectures and writes on various occasions, for example for the Leiden University. Furthermore, she is Secretary of the Supervisory Board of the Bonnefanten Museum in Maastricht and Advising Committee Member for the multi-year Heritage Grant and the two-year Development Grant of the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts.
She has an educational background in art and culture sciences (Erasmus University of Rotterdam), modern and contemporary art (VU University Amsterdam) and museum curating (VU University and University of Amsterdam). In Rotterdam she produced shows at the Netherlands Architecture Institute and the International Architecture Biennale.
