Research profile

Bas Rosier (1990, The Netherlands) is a postdoctoral researcher in the group of prof. Maarten Merkx in the Department of Chemical Biology and the Institute for Complex Molecular Systems, in collaboration with the group of dr. Javier Ramón Azcón at the Institute of Bioengineering of Catalonia. He develops antibody-based nanoswitches using DNA nanotechnology for continuous monitoring of analytes and biomarkers in organ-on-a-chip microfluidic devices.

Academic background

After completing his secondary education in 2007 at Trevianum in Sittard (The Netherlands), Bas Rosier received his BSc and MSc in biomedical engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology (The Netherlands). As part of his master’s degree, he performed a five-month internship at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University (USA), working in the group of dr. W.M. Shih on the development of a fluorescence barcoding system for a microfluidic DNA origami-scaffolded, SNARE-mediated vesicle fusion assay. For his master thesis he worked in the group of prof. E.W. Meijer, under supervision of prof. T.F.A. de Greef, and investigated the use of microfluidic gradient-generating devices in the fields of supramolecular chemistry and chemical biology. After graduating cum laude in 2014, he started his PhD research at the Institute for Complex Molecular Systems (ICMS) and the laboratory of Chemical Biology at Eindhoven University of Technology (The Netherlands) under supervision of prof. T.F.A. de Greef and prof. L. Brunsveld and obtained his doctoral degree in 2019. The main focus of his research was to use DNA origami-based nanoscaffolds as biomolecular organizing platforms for studying proximity-driven interactions of relevant biomolecules, in particular proteins.
