Bart Schutte is a doctoral candidate at the Eindhoven School of Education (ESoE), Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). He holds a bachelor's degree in teaching Biology from the University of Applied Sciences Utrecht and a master's degree in Educational Sciences from Utrecht University. From 2019 to 2021, he worked as a biology teacher in secondary education, after which he enrolled in the master's program. During his studies, he served as a member of the Program Advisory Committee (PAC) and worked as a student assistant, recruiting schools for research projects. He graduated in 2023 with a thesis on the effects of quizzes when studying instructional videos in secondary education.
Following graduation, Bart began his PhD, focusing on the implementation of Challenge-Based Learning (CBL) as a method to integrate Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into secondary education. His research explores the characteristics of CBL for ESD in secondary education, the opportunities and challenges teachers face—particularly regarding interdisciplinarity within the boundaries of secondary education in addressing complex problems—and how teachers scaffold such problems. His work also examines the development of students' sustainability competencies. This project aims to contribute to innovative approaches for designing and implementing education for sustainability, helping to better prepare students to understand the complexities of current and future challenges and their role in promoting a sustainable future.
In 2015 stemden de VN-lidstaten in met 17 wereldwijde duurzame ontwikkelingsdoelstellingen (Sustainable Development Goals, SDG's) om armoede te beëindigen, de planeet te beschermen en voor iedereen welvaart te garanderen.
