Bart Verhaegh is a doctoral researcher in the Mechanics of Materials group at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology. His research explores the role of second-phase particles in shaping the mechanical performance of advanced high-strength green steels. Through a combination of high-resolution experimental techniques and microstructural analysis, he investigates how these particles influence deformation mechanisms, fracture behavior, and material ductility.
This work is embedded in the broader NWO-funded Particles on the Edge (PLEDGE) project, which aims to develop predictive understanding of phase-particle interactions in hydrogen-based green steel production. Bart’s findings contribute to improving the strength–toughness balance in recyclable, low-emission steels—offering pathways to more sustainable industrial applications.
To make steel part of a sustainable future, we need to understand what happens at the tiniest scales. Only by mastering its microstructure can we shape a material that is not only stronger and tougher—but cleaner and greener too.
Bart Verhaegh completed his BSc and MSc degree in mechanical engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). He finished his MSc with a thesis showcasing the possibility of homogenisation of micro-structures using Neural Networks in multi-scale FE analyses. During his MSc, he did an internship at the Rotterdam based startup RAMLAB where he worked on thermomechanical simulation of wire-arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) in marine applications.
During his Master's, Bart co-founded software startup 'Closure' in which he has been active in the role of CTO for 7 years. Closure aids heirs of deceased people in finalizing contracts, accounts and subscriptions.
