"Computational Science & Engineering is a fruitful breeding ground, allowing for vey many cross-fertilizations!"
Research profile
Computational Science & Engineering (CSE) is of vital importance to society. It enables computer simulation of processes, phenomena and systems that cannot be studied in real experiments. A strong pull on CSE is the quest for ever more realism, increasing the importance of multi-scaledness and multi-disciplinarity. CSE is becoming partly model-driven, partly data-driven; a fruitful marriage between Computational Science and Data Science.
Scientific Computing (Numerical Mathematics) is at the heart of CSE. Scientific Computing finds its genericity, research foci and relevance in the numerical methods commonly used across the various scientific and engineering disciplines.
Academic background
Barry Koren received his MSc degree in Aerospace Engineering and his PhD degree in Numerical Mathematics, both from TU Delft. Prior to his appointment at TU/e, he was full professor Numerical Analysis at Leiden University, full professor Computational Fluid Dynamics at TU Delft, and leader of the research group Modelling, Analysis and Simulation and member of the management team of the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) in Amsterdam.
Barry Koren served as editor of the Journal of Computational Physics and as a member of several national and international scientific boards, committees and research programs. He was president of the Royal Dutch Mathematical Society (KWG), chair of the Dutch-Flemish Scientific Computing Society and scientific adviser at CWI. He still is adviser at the Netherlands Aerospace Centre (NLR) in Amsterdam. At the TU/e Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, he was vice-dean research for four years and acting dean twice. He has (co-)authored and (co-)edited six books, five special journal issues, and about 200 scientific papers. So far, Barry has supervised 28 PhD researchers, 65 MSc students and 15 BSc students.
