Academic background

Baichen received his bachelor's and master’s degree in Energy & Environment Systems Engineering from Zhejiang University (ZJU) in China. He carried out his Ph.D. at Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in Denmark from 2020 to 2023. During this time, he was working on the project titled “Engineering porous electrodes for advanced redox flow batteries”. Specifically, he investigated morphological properties and electrochemical performance of carbon-fiber electrodes using X-ray computed tomography and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy.

During 2022 to 2023, Baichen started a six-month external stay as a visiting Ph.D. student in the Electrochemical Materials and Systems group at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), working on the project titled “imprinting flow field geometry on redox flow battery electrodes”. After obtaining his Ph.D., Baichen returned back to the same group in February 2024 as a postdoctoral researcher under Antoni Forner-Cuenca. He works on the development of novel porous electrodes through the Non-Solvent Induced Phase Separation technique, aimed at the application in affordable iron-air redox flow batteries.

Research profile

The aim of the project “Engineered Porous Electrodes to Unlock Ultralow Cost Fe-Air Redox Flow Batteries is to design the electrode three-dimensional microstructures and synthetize advanced electrode microstructures from the bottom-up. In this project, the electrodes with highly-architected microstructure will be synthesized through non-solvent induced phase separation technique, especially aimed at the application in low-cost iron-air redox flow batteries.  These highly organized electrodes are expected to significantly enhance the performance of electrochemical storage systems.
