Research profile

Arne Froyen is a doctoral candidate in the Stimuli-responsive Functional Materials and Devices (SFD) group under supervision of prof. dr. Albert Schenning and dr. Danqing Liu. Arne works on electrically responsive smart windows based on liquid crystal molecules. Such smart windows can be used as indoor temperature regulators by changing the reflection properties under an electric field.

Academic background

Arne Froyen started to study chemistry in 2013 at Hasselt University (Hasselt, Belgium). He completed his Bachelor’s degree with a research project on low bandgap materials for organic solar cells. During the summer of 2016, he worked as a research assistant at Hasselt University on membrane filtration of P3HT and polystyrene using modified ceramic membranes.

Arne continued his academic career with a master at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) where he followed the molecular systems and materials chemistry track within the Chemical Engineering department. In his second year, he joined SFD where he worked on his graduation project titled “photo-responsive polyethylene” under the supervision of dr. Shaji Varghese and prof. dr. Albert Schenning. To finalize his master’s degree, Arne moved to Lemförde (Germany) for his industrial internship. He worked for four months at BASF on the development of high-performance polyurethanes under supervision of dr. Zeljko Tomovic. Since October 2018, he works as a doctoral candidate in the Stimuli-responsive Functional Materials and Devices group.
