Research profile
Dr. Agnese Scalbi is an Assistant Professor in Sustainable Structural Design at the Department of the Built Environment, Eindhoven University of Technology. Her research advances the circular transition of the built environment by promoting the reuse of building materials, elements, and components in both new construction and renovation projects, with particular focus on existing building stock and strategies that extend their service life.
Her work integrates structural and materials engineering, combining experimental testing, finite element modelling, and structural reliability assessment. At TU/e, she has developed deconstruction-oriented approaches for concrete structures, including demountable and reusable connections, and quality-assurance procedures for reclaimed precast elements.
Before her current appointment as Assistant Professor, she worked as a postdoctoral researcher at TU/e (ReCreate project), Politecnico di Milano, Italian National Council of Research (CNR), and the European Commission’s ELSA laboratory. Across these roles, she contributed to bridge and railway infrastructure assessment, monitoring and maintenance criteria, non-destructive diagnostics, seismic performance studies of precast concrete systems, and innovation in circular cement-based materials. Her portfolio also includes peer-reviewed publishing, grant proposal development, and contributions to technical guidelines and policy-oriented knowledge transfer.
Academic background
Agnese Scalbi holds a PhD in Engineering from Università Politecnica delle Marche (Italy), in the curriculum Civil, Environmental, Building Engineering and Architecture, following MSc and BSc degrees in Building Engineering and Buildings Restoration Engineering at the same institution.
She is currently appointed as Assistant Professor at Eindhoven University of Technology (since November 2024), after a postdoctoral appointment at TU/e in the ReCreate project (2023–2024). Earlier, she was Postdoctoral Researcher at Politecnico di Milano (2019–2021), CNR’s Institute for Applied Mathematics (2018–2019), and the European Commission’s ELSA laboratory (2017–2018).
She is active in teaching and supervision at BSc, MSc, and PhD level, and contributes to scientific dissemination through invited lectures, workshops, and professional courses.
