Following an optimization-as-a-tool paradigm, our focus lies in devising design and control methods for multi-scale cyber-socio-technical systems, with main applications in mobility and energy and curiosity-driven exploratory projects in pandemics and advanced materials. Our overarching goal is to pursue research that is firmly anchored in our societal and environmental responsibility as engineers and, first and foremost, as individuals.

Motivation and Vision: Energy and mobility systems, and, more broadly, socio-technical infrastructures, are facing and causing significant challenges, such as the climate crisis and social injustice. The advent of new technologies including autonomy, connectivity, big data, and electrification, together with recent advances in optimization and control, may offer opportunities to address these challenges, or drive us into the engineering trap, where we provide technically optimal answers to the wrong questions, ultimately exacerbating those challenges. In this context, we study the design and operation of complex systems in a joint and multi-scale fashion, from individual components and vehicles up to system-wide infrastructural layers, accounting for their interaction and embedding fairness, incentive mechanisms, and operationalized theories of justice as integral to sustainability.

In 2015 stemden de VN-lidstaten in met 17 wereldwijde duurzame ontwikkelingsdoelstellingen (Sustainable Development Goals, SDG's) om armoede te beëindigen, de planeet te beschermen en voor iedereen welvaart te garanderen. Ons werk draagt bij aan de volgende duurzame ontwikkelingsdoelstelling(en):
