Introductie / missie
The Research Laboratory on Electromagnetics for Care & Cure (EM4C&C) is an important and fast growing topic within the Electromagnetics Group at the Eindhoven University of Technology. The EM4C&C lab investigates novel approaches for application of electromagnetic waves in medical applications, like neurostimulation (tDCS/TI/FUS), magnetic resonance (MR) guided thermal therapy and wireless communication with implanted electronics. The lab is chaired by Prof. Dr. Ir. Maarten Paulides, and the main themes of research are:
- Neurostimulation – led by Dr. Ir. Rob Mestrom, supported by Prof. Dr. Paul Boon (also UZGent)
- Clinical MR hardware – led by Dr. I Zivkovic, supported by Dr. Debra Rivera
- MR guided therapy - led by Prof. Dr. Ir. Maarten Paulides (also Erasmus MC), supported by Prof. Dr. Coen Hurkmans (also Catharina Hospital)
- In-body sensing and power transfer – led by Dr. Ir. Sander Bronckers, supported by Dr. Ir. Ad Reniers and Prof. Dr. Ir. Huib Visser (also IMEC)
The research spans from fundamental work on the modelling of electromagnetic wave interaction with tissues to the development, evaluation and validation of novel techniques, tools and devices. Examples are understanding and modelling of neurostimulation and the development of novel heating devices for MR imaging guided cancer therapy. Our approach is based on multidisciplinary health-related research projects that are being conducted in synergy with medical partners and a wide range of industries (small, medium and large enterprises). Whenever required, we seek to supplement our electromagnetic expertise with the strengths of other groups of the TU/e, including sensing, modeling, imaging, monitoring, minimally-invasive interventions, ICT embedded systems and ubiquitous computing.

Over de organisatie
The Care & Cure Lab of the Electromagnetics group (EM4C&C) is an important driver for medical technology research at Eindhoven University of Technology. We investigate novel approaches for application of electromagnetic waves in medical applications, like combining electro-encephalography (EEG) with simultaneous neurostimulation, magnetic resonance (MR) guided radiation and thermal therapies and wireless communication with implanted electronics.
Our research spans from fundational work on modelling of electromagnetic wave interaction with tissue (e.g. neuronal exitation) to the development, evaluation and validation of novel techniques, tools and devices (tailored MRI recieve approaches, MR compatible treatment devices).
