Optical element of a material with a high refraction index and permeability for infrared radiation. The transmission of the IR light through/by the element depends on the medium with which it is in contact. By measuring the transmission, information about the medium can be gained. The quality of the element is determined by the material properties and the quality of the refined surfaces.
