The energy transition and circular economy require the application of new, emerging technologies. To understand their impact and potential contribution requires a sustainability assessment. Assessments are more than simply measuring. They are also about goal setting, contributing to change, supporting decision making, and dealing with pluralism and uncertainty. We look at assessment as fact based, value driven and change oriented processes. In this course, we focus on how to conduct sustainability assessment and especially Life Cycle Assessment (LCA); how these assessments affect decision and policy making and the social debate; how these assessments can help construct a technological trajectory for emerging technologies; and the scientific basis we build upon, e.g. research paradigms and methodology. As such, the course is suited for students of different disciplinary backgrounds.
