The course discusses a model-based engineering approach for supervisory control. This method entails a.o. modelling the uncontrolled system as a discrete-event system (automaton) and modelling the requirements the supervisory controller is supposed to achieve.Relevant concepts for such supervisory controllers are controllability, non-blockingness, safety and maximal permissiveness, and these are discussed in the course.
The CIF 3 tool set that is developed within the Control Systems Technology group of the Department of Mechanical Engineering is used as a vehicle for applying and demonstrating these techniques.
