Modern epitaxial growth techniques allow the construction of semiconductor nanostructures such as e.g. nanowires and quantum dots. Low-dimensional semiconductors and semiconductor nanostructures exhibit very interesting and new physics (Nobel prizes in Physics 1984, 1998, 2000 2009 and 2014).After an introduction of the basic semiconductor properties like bandstructure and quantum confinement, we will introduce nanowires and quantum dots. Subsequently, we will focus on the electronic, optical and magnetic properties of bulk semiconductors, quantum wells and quantum dots and the devices based on them.
