In the last decade, the study of sociotechnical transitions (and sustainability transitions in particular) has become a major growth area in the Innovation Sciences. Sociotechnical transitions are long-term processes, in which societal and technical transformations interact in powerful yet often unexpected ways, and produce radical historical change. Research shows that sociotechnical transitions may take decades (sometimes even centuries) to unfold. And that they are difficult to understand—let alone govern.
