Technological developments have been fundamentally shaping organizations and work over the past decades. Especially with continuous development in artificial intelligence (AI) methods and systems, work is yet to undergo even more far-reaching changes that will affect individuals, teams, and leaders in organizations. To enable effective collaboration between humans and AI systems and to guarantee employee wellbeing, the topic of AI in organizations needs to be addressed from a multidisciplinary perspective. In this course, we will combine perspectives from organizational psychology with theories from human-technology interaction and computer science to address AI in organizational settings at multiple levels:
(1) Individual level:
a. How do individuals collaborate with AI at work?
b. How are individuals affected by AI-related changes at work?
c. How can system design be inspired by organizational psychology?
(2) Team level:
a. How do teams interact with AI, as artificial agents are becoming team members?
(3) Organizational level:
a. How can organizations assist implementation and help employees to adapt to AI at work to foster effective long-term collaboration?
To better understand the role that AI will play in organizations and the changes that are associated with it, we will use current examples of real-world AI applications in organizations, such as AI teammates, decision support systems, or robotics across diverse organizational domains (e.g., personnel selection, management).
The course consists of a mix of instructional modes that are grouped in: (1) self-learning periods and (2) in-class sessions. During the self-learning periods, you are provided with short online videos ("knowledge clips") and literature covering core concepts. In-class sessions are designed for students to get involved in their group projects as well as in-depth discussions on the topics of the course. A core element of each class is an expert impulse lecture, highlighting current trends and research. Lectures are provided by experts from research and industry. Some in-class sessions are designed as interactive workshops where students can apply the learning material.
Doelstellingen
The aim of this course is that students learn to explain central theories and concepts relating to human-AI collaboration at work and change management, and learn to apply this knowledge and use methods to analyze and evaluate AI implementation projects within organizations.
Specifically, this means that after this course, students are able to:
- indicate different AI implementations and their potential impact on employees, based on the study material.
- analyze a work context where AI is being implemented or will be implemented, identifying benefits and challenges.
- formulate practical recommendations based on the analysis, with the acquired knowledge from the course.
