Thermodynamics:
 
  • Definitions and basic concepts of thermodynamics (equations of state, state variables, systems, processes, ideal gas law).
  • Introduction of the first law of thermodynamics and application to some simple examples.
  • Introduction of the second law of thermodynamics, definition of entropy, and entropy production.
  • Application of the first and second law to some practical examples.
 

Heat and flow:
 
  • Different modes of heat transfer
  • Governing differential equations and boundary conditions
  • Stationary heat conduction in various coordinate systems
  • Lumped approximation
  • Heat conduction for plates, cylinders, spheres and semi-infinite media
  • Introduction to convective heat transfer and non-dimensional numbers
  • Introduction to radiative heat transfer

Heat and flow
  • Knowledge of different mechanisms for heat transfer;
  • Knowledge of non-dimensional numbers that determine the heat transfer by means of conduction and convection;
  • The ability to solve analytically  relatively simple heat conduction problems;
  • The ability to solve analytically relatively simple heat convection problems;
  • The ability to solve analytically relatively simple radiation problems
