Omschrijving

The structure, development, (patho)physiology and pathology of the heart, vessel, and blood are discussed systematically, with special attention to technological aspects and clinical applications.

Heart
1. Anatomy and morphology of the heart
2. Physiology (cardiac cycle, mechanics, ECG) and adaptation
3. Pathophysiology of the heart
4. Diseases (including ischemic heart disease, arrhythmias, valvular heart disease, heart failure)

Vessel
1. Anatomy and structure of the vascular system (arteries, veins, capillaries)
2. Physiology of vessels (mechanics, hemostasis, exchange) and adaptation
3. Pathophysiology
4. Diseases (including atherosclerosis, peripheral vascular disease)

Blood
1. Components of blood
2. Physiological functions of blood (temperature control, nutrient distribution, waste management, gas exchange)
3. Physical properties of the blood and hemodynamics
4. Hemostasis, coagulation, and fibrinolysis
5. Pathophysiology
6. Diseases (including hemorrhage and thrombosis)

Doelstellingen

After passing the course, the student has knowledge of:
  1. The components of the cardiovascular system and can describe their individual and integrated functions.
  2. The structure of heart and vessel, and can describe how these structures support their function.
  3. The composition and properties of blood and can outline the role of blood in physiology and hemostasis.
  4. The basic pathology and pathophysiology of the cardiovascular system and can describe and explain the abnormal structure and function.
  5. The basic biochemical and physical mechanisms relevant for cardiovascular functioning and can translate medical questions to technological application in multidisciplinary settings.
