Doelstellingen
After the end of this course, you (the student) will be able to:1. Recall the concepts of energy supply/ demand and power. Recognize the several energy forms and understand the thermodynamic limits to calculate the conversion efficiency between energy forms.
2. Identify the major (renewable) sources of heat and electricity.
3. Integrate the knowledge on the principles of one of these sources (LO #2) to discuss its state-of-the art at technical level and assess its energy potential in the coming decades.
4. Explain the physical and chemical principles of electricity and heat harvesting from solar energy and nuclear energy, respectively. Apply these principles to calculate and/or sketch specific properties associated with the conversion of solar energy into electricity and nuclear energy into heat and electricity.
5. Demonstrate the need for energy storage based on existing data for energy consumption and production, and compare the different, available approaches.
6. Explain the physical and chemical principles of energy storage through batteries, electrolyzers, and thermal energy storage technologies. Apply these principles to calculate and/or sketch specific properties associated with the above-mentioned energy storage approaches.
