This modules deals with technologies intentionally designed to achieve positive changes of behaviour or attitude; they are often described as persuasive technologies or behaviour change support systems. Current sensing and self-tracking technologies have led to a proliferation of such solutions which are not always effective. This module provides students with a background on theories from psychology and behaviour economics, design frameworks, and evaluation methodology for helping address some of the challenges designers of these technologies have to address. The module includes coverage of ethics issues in the design. It involves an individual reading assignment that is assessed with a written test, and a group design project assessed on the basis of a group report and individual reflections.
