This course covers the fundamentals of statistical inference and testing and gives an introduction to statistical modeling. The first half of the course focuses on probability theory; the second half on estimation and testing of population characteristics based on sample data. After the course, students have acquired knowledge about probabilities, commonly used probability distributions, statistical parameters as expectation and variance, random samples and they can perform calculations relating to these notions. They can summarize data and use data to estimate parameters, to create confidence intervals and to perform hypothesis tests. Furthermore, they have the knowledge to interpret the corresponding results. Throughout the course, real-data examples will be used in the lectures and homework problems. Pen-and-paper exercises will be used to give students a deeper understanding and to train the basis statistical skills.
