Clustering--that is, partitioning a data set into clusters consisting of ``similar'' elements--is a fundamental problem in data analysis. In this course we study various questions related to clustering: How can we formulate the clustering problem in precise mathematical terms? Which techniques can we employ to develop effective implementations of clustering algorithms, and how can we alleviate the ``curse of dimensionality'' that hampers many clustering algorithms?
