The TU/e UrbanLabs is a platform established to strengthen the link between research, education and practice in order to address systemic urban challenges.

Real-world assignments in real-world settings with real-world actors result in novel real-world solutions for the fundamental real-world challenges society and cities are currently facing.

The UrbanLabs work in a three-way approach, representing the three-fold mission of the TU/e on research-driven education with societal impact:
1. Real-world living lab for state-of-the-art research: TU/e experts define and research concrete assignments for students, in collaboration with external partners and based on urgent systemic urban challenges experienced by their organizations.
2. Challenge-based learning for talent development: By working on real-life cases, students become prepared to address contemporary, cross-disciplinary and complex systemic urban planning and design challenges.
3. Multi-stakeholder collaboration for lifelong learning: Experts from different organizations actively participate in research and education, gaining innovative input and perspectives to integrate into their daily work.

Within each ImpactLab, the following activities are organized:
Research projects: An ImpactLab offers the possibility to conduct multiple short or long-term research projects. The research questions and projects are defined in a co-creation process with the partners of the ImpactLab.
Master design studios: Every ImpactLab offers one master design studio per academic year. The design assignments of the master studios are created together with the external partners, resulting in relevant challenges and projects in an urban living lab setting.
Knowledge sharing products: During the academic year, various moments for reflection and knowledge sharing are planned. The results from the research projects and design studios are actively shared through workshops, symposia, and publications so that lessons learned reach external partners and university networks.
