Beschrijving

Organic Diode Lasers (ODLs) have not yet been convincingly demonstrated. The complete theory for an ODL
we have developed, can very well be validated with our observed sub-nanosecond response pulses, when restricted to
sub-threshold cases. By extrapolating the theory to situations above threshold, it becomes clear why electrically pumped
organic lasing has proven so difficult. In the absence of photon absorption by triplets, we predict laser thresholds for
feasible electrical current densities, especially when bimolecular singlet absorptions are weak. For Alq3 as active
material, laser operation can occur only during a few nanoseconds at most. For successful realization of a CWoperating ODL, a material with minimal triplet absorption should be identified.
