The application of plasmas in medicine is currently a hot topic because of the ability of plasma to inactivate microorganisms as well as cancer cells with very little or no damage to the healthy host cells. This required a new class of atmospheric pressure plasmas to be developed, which are able to deliver a complex mixture of chemically active compounds, (UV) light, charge and electric fields without heating up the substrate significantly or transferring significant currents. The topic of plasmas in medicine is very broad and requires a truly interdisciplinary approach. However, already focusing on physics, there are many new challenges. The research faces bottlenecks in the gas phase plasma, its micro- and macroscopic effects on the substrate and especially at the gas phase – liquid interface.
