We analyse systems of three strongly interacting identical bosons using realistic multichannel two-body interactions. Using a two-channel model, we study the dependence of the Efimov potential on the resonance width, revealing a distinct decrease in the depth of the potential as the resonance becomes narrow. In contrastto this behaviour we find the short-range three-body repulsion, which has previously been linked with van der Waals universality of the three-body parameter, to be fixed by the van der Waals length regardless of the resonance width. Furthermore, we attribute our results to the dominance of the two-body interaction in the resonant channel compared to other background interactions. In addition to such effective theoretical models, we are also interested in multichannel effects in realistic three-body systems. Specifically, we study strongly interacting 7Li, whose Efimov states are known to exhibit intriguing and poorly understood deviations from universal theory. Our computations of three-body loss rates and bound state energies show the importance of including all three-body hyperfine channels in computations, by directly comparing to the available experimental data. Furthermore, we isolate the origin of this importance to a specific three-body channel, which has been shown to give a strongly altered Efimov spectrum in previous studies.
